South Kingstown Residents Weigh In on New High School, Athletic Complex Plans
Community members gathered at South Kingstown Town Hall to discuss the design and development of the new South Kingstown High School and its associated athletic facilities. Hosted by the South Kingstown School Building Committee, the forum allowed residents to provide input on various aspects of the project, including the need for enhanced accessibility features and careful planning to avoid drainage problems in the proposed athletic complex at Curtis Corner.
The new high school, which will replace the existing facility on Columbia Street, will include modern learning environments, cutting-edge technology, and specialized spaces for a range of subjects and activities. The project is slated for completion in Fall 2027 and will prioritize sustainability, with plans to explore geothermal energy options. The $11 million allocated for the athletic complex is being carefully managed to ensure it does not impact the overall school budget.
RIDOH Closes Camp Fuller YMCA Over Water Quality Concerns
Brendan Kenny has taken over the reins of the Narragansett location of the beloved ice cream shop formerly known as Brickley's. As of August 1st, the store will operate under a new name, Baron's Homemade Ice Cream. The change signifies a fresh beginning for the establishment, which has been a local favorite for its quality homemade ice cream.
It is also noteworthy that Brickley's in Wakefield remains open and will continue to serve its popular treats to the public.
Plastic Pollution and Its Consequences: A Public Forum at URI
On August 21, Rhode Island PBS and the University of Rhode Island will host a discussion titled "Breaking Down Plastics" to address the extensive impact of plastic pollution. The event will begin with a screening of a PBS segment on microplastics, followed by a panel discussion moderated by reporter Michelle San Miguel. URI researchers will discuss the alarming presence of over 1,000 tons of microplastics in Narragansett Bay, examining the implications for human health, particularly concerning brain function as we age, and the broader environmental consequences for marine life. The event is free, but registration is required.
