Review Finds South Kingstown Officer's Force Within Law, Amid Broader Policing Concerns
The Attorney General's office of Rhode Island has reviewed body camera footage from a South Kingstown police officer's June encounter with an man and declared the officer's use of force within legal limits.
The narrow scope of the review did not extend to the full context of the incident, which involved a mistaken report of a stolen car leading to a forceful detainment of Jonathan Garvey, a 61-year-old resident.
An internal review by South Kingstown Police criticized the officer's approach, suggesting a need for improved communication and de-escalation techniques.
The incident has raised broader concerns regarding police interactions with vulnerable individuals and has highlighted ongoing discussions about de-escalation training and methods in law enforcement.
Sewer Connection Approved, Narragansett Inches Closer to New Housing Units
The Narragansett Town Council has taken a significant step forward in a housing development project by granting conditional approval for a sewer connection on Point Judith Road. This decision effectively sets aside the sewer policy committee's recommendations against the waiver, paving the way for a potential eight-unit building that promises to incorporate affordable housing options.
While this approval is critical, it does not guarantee the development's final green light, which remains in the hands of the Planning Board for future deliberation. The Council's decision is strictly limited to the sewer connection aspect, with the understanding that the developer will bear the costs for design, installation, and town inspection of the sewer extension.
The Council's move has been met with mixed public reactions, with some residents emphasizing the importance of affordable housing and others expressing concerns over environmental impact and zoning considerations.

Rams Rally to Knock Off Portland, 64-58
In a display of resilience and strategic play, the Rhode Island women's basketball team overcame an early disadvantage to secure a win against Portland at the Las Vegas Holiday Classic. Initially down by 11 points due to early turnovers and a surge by Portland's Maisie Burnham, the Rams rallied with a 12-4 run to narrow the gap. Although they faced an 11-point deficit again in the second quarter, strategic plays brought them within four points at halftime.
The Rams gained their first lead in the third quarter, thanks to consecutive scores by Anaelle Dutat and Tenin Magassa, maintaining a slender lead into the final period. In the fourth quarter, a series of free throws solidified their advantage despite a scoreless stretch. Portland's late efforts were insufficient, and Rhode Island emerged victorious, marking their second consecutive win at the Classic. The team demonstrated strong defensive capabilities and a rebounding edge, setting a positive tone for their upcoming home game.
Men’s Basketball
Rhode Island 76, Yale 72
In a thrilling display of resilience, the University of Rhode Island's men's basketball team overcame a substantial first-half deficit to secure a win against Yale. The Rams, who at one point lagged by 18 points, rallied before halftime to reduce their shortfall. The second half saw Rhode Island's defense tighten and their offensive rebounds increase, allowing them to seize the lead with less than eight minutes remaining. Despite Yale's attempts to even the score, Rhode Island maintained their advantage, concluding the game with strategic plays and a key block that ensured their triumph.
Key contributors to Rhode Island's victory were Luis Kortright, who led the team in scoring, and Zek Montgomery, who was on the brink of a double-double. Tyson Brown also had a standout performance with a career-high in points, complemented by critical defensive plays. The Rams exhibited a dominant second-chance scoring capability and benefited from a robust performance by their bench players. With this win, Rhode Island preserves their undefeated home record and sets the stage for their upcoming match against Providence.
