South Kingstown Seeks Community Input for Safe Streets Initiative

The Rhode Island Public Transit Authority (RIPTA) and the Town of South Kingstown are joining forces to enhance street safety. They are inviting community members to provide feedback on their experiences with local roadways, whether by car, foot, bus, or bike. The SS4A consultant team will be available at the Farmers Market at URI on July 27 to gather input.

RIPTA received a $5 million federal Action Plan Grant from the SS4A program, which will help develop a comprehensive Safe Streets Action Plan for 31 Rhode Island communities. This plan aims to reduce fatalities and serious injuries on the road. Following its development, municipalities can apply for additional grants to implement the plan.

For more information and to get involved, visit the Safe Streets for All project page.

South Kingstown, South County Hospital Near Parking Agreement

South Kingstown officials are finalizing an agreement with South County Hospital to use the Route 1 former police station site for additional hospital parking. The new plan, which avoids using a nearby park with Native American remains, involves selling adjacent land to the hospital, currently occupied by the town’s old police headquarters and other services. In return, the town would receive space for ambulances and quarters for emergency personnel, with the Department of Public Services being relocated. The deal would provide the hospital with about 30 much-needed parking spaces. South County Hospital and town officials are in active discussions to find mutually beneficial solutions.

Rhode Island Declares Blood Emergency, Seeks Type O Donations

The Rhode Island Blood Center (RIBC) has declared a blood emergency, urgently requesting type O+ and O- donations. Recent donations have fallen significantly short, leaving the type O inventory at its lowest since the COVID-19 pandemic. The optimal supply is five to seven days, but the current supply is only two to three days. Governor Dan McKee has called on all eligible Rhode Islanders to donate blood to address this critical need and help save lives.
Appointments can be made at the South County Donor Center, located at 14 Woodruff Ave., Narragansett, R.I. 02882, by calling (401) 453-8383 or online at South County Donor Center.

Jamie Brenner Author Event - July 24

Wednesday July 24, Wakefield Books hosts author Jamie Brenner at the Narragansett Library at 6pm. Jamie is the bestselling author of eight novels including The Forever Summer and Blush. She grew up in suburban Philadelphia on a steady diet of books and daytime dramas, then moved to New York City for a career in publishing before becoming an author at age forty. After raising two daughters in Manhattan, Jamie has returned to her hometown and spends her summers visiting the beaches that inspire her novels. Jamie's new book, A Novel Summer, is the quintessential beach read - set in Provincetown, Cape Cod, it's the story of a bestselling author who finds love and second chances in the stacks of a quaint beach town bookshop. This event is free to attend, but we do ask that you register so we can plan accordingly.
