Narragansett and RIDOT Clash Over Beach Parking Restrictions
A dispute has arisen between Narragansett and the Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) after the town installed three-hour parking signs along Ocean Road, a state-owned road. RIDOT issued a cease-and-desist letter, and the town subsequently removed the signs. The signs were part of a local effort to manage traffic, but RIDOT's intervention surprised town officials. RIDOT Director Peter Alviti stated that the Traffic Commission would review the situation and hear from both parties on July 10 before making a decision. Alviti stressed that RIDOT does not aim to restrict beachgoers but acknowledged opposition from some residents and businesses to the town's parking limits.
South Kingstown Candidates Prepare for Key November Election
Sixteen candidates in South Kingstown are vying for nine open seats on the Town Council and School Committee in the upcoming November election. Among the candidates, Democratic incumbents Deb Bergner and Michelle Brousseau were notably not endorsed by the Democratic Town Committee. Bergner is undeterred by the lack of endorsement, while Brousseau expressed disappointment, citing past disagreements with committee chairman Mike McEntee. Independent candidate Dorald Beasley, a frequent critic of local government, has also entered the race.
New Rhode Island Law Simplifies Adding Rental Units to Homes
Rhode Island has enacted a new law to simplify the development of accessory dwelling units (ADUs) on owner-occupied properties. Signed by Governor Dan McKee, this legislation aims to address the housing crisis by creating affordable living spaces and providing homeowners with a source of income. The law restricts ADUs from being used as short-term rentals and ensures they meet specific building codes and infrastructure requirements. Similar measures have been adopted in New York and Massachusetts, reflecting a broader trend to increase affordable housing options. Advocates highlight the benefits for older adults and the potential to stabilize the housing market.
Celebrate Summer with Fresh, Local Foods
Make the most of summer by visiting your local farmers' markets for the freshest, locally-harvested foods. Enjoy the unbeatable taste of Rhode Island-grown tomatoes, corn, summer squash, lettuce, and blueberries, perfect for complementing a meal of locally-sourced meat or seafood. Shopping at a farmers' market is not only a nutritious choice but also a delightful way to celebrate the bounty of the summer harvest.
