DEM Adds Lifeguard Certification Tests to Accommodate Student Schedules

The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (DEM) has announced additional lifeguard certification tests to accommodate college and high school students who could not attend earlier sessions due to school commitments. Lifeguard candidates must obtain state certification and possess valid training cards in lifeguard training, first aid, and CPR.

Upcoming certification tests for surf lifeguards will be held at Scarborough North State Beach in Narragansett on Thursday, June 27, from 9 AM to 12 PM, and Tuesday, July 16, from 9 to 10 AM. Non-surf lifeguard certification tests will take place at Lincoln Woods State Park Beach in Lincoln on Friday, June 28, from 9:30 to 10:30 AM, and Friday, July 12, from 9:30 to 10:30 AM.

DEM continues to accept applications for qualified lifeguards to staff state beach facilities, offering a $500 sign-on bonus for those hired by June 28 and an additional $500 retention bonus at the end of the season. As of now, DEM has hired 109 lifeguards.

Pre-registration for a testing timeslot is strongly recommended. Walk-in registrations are accepted up to an hour before the last timeslot, though availability is not guaranteed. Candidates must bring a photo ID, lifeguard training documentation, CPR and First Aid certificates, a completed Lifeguard Certification Form, and proof of endurance swim, if applicable. Minors must have a parent or legal guardian sign their form. A $10 fee for the certification card is required upon successful test completion.

New Ordinance Regulates Short-Term Rentals in Narragansett

The Town Council of Narragansett has passed a comprehensive ordinance to regulate short-term rentals within the town, aiming to balance community needs with the economic benefits of such rentals. Effective September 1, 2024, the new ordinance mandates that all short-term rentals must obtain permits, undergo safety inspections, and adhere to strict occupancy and parking requirements.

The ordinance, known as the "Short-term Rental Ordinance," establishes a framework to ensure public health, safety, and welfare. Hosts must submit applications, pay fees, and maintain liability insurance. The ordinance also sets annual limits on the number of permits issued, with a gradual reduction over three years, starting with 1,100 permits in 2024.

Permits are non-transferable and expire annually, with renewals subject to compliance checks. Violations of the ordinance can lead to fines and permit revocations. The ordinance also stipulates that local representatives must be available to address issues 24/7, and detailed information must be posted within rental units.

The ordinance aims to preserve the residential character of neighborhoods while providing flexible housing options and supporting the local economy.
