Indian Lake to Undergo Treatment for Invasive Plant Hydrilla on June 27
The Rhode Island DEM will treat Indian Lake on June 27 to control the invasive plant Hydrilla verticillata. The treatment is safe for fish and wildlife. Anglers and boaters are advised to avoid the lake during the treatment. DEM received federal funding to manage the invasive plant, which was first detected in Indian Lake in 2023. Boaters are urged to clean their equipment to prevent the spread of Hydrilla to other waterbodies.
Dead Humpback Whale Found on Block Island: Public Advised to Keep Distance
A dead humpback whale has been discovered on Block Island. Mystic Aquarium conducted initial examinations, finding no immediate cause of death. The public is cautioned to avoid the whale due to health risks and legal restrictions. The aquarium is working with the Center for Coastal Studies to identify the whale and hopes the high tide will carry it back to sea. The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management may assist with removal if needed.
