First EEE Virus Detections of 2024 in Rhode Island Prompt Public Advisory

The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management and the Rhode Island Department of Health have confirmed the first cases of Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) virus for 2024, with two positive mosquito samples collected on June 10 in Tiverton and Coventry. This early detection is significant as it marks an unusual timing for the virus's presence. EEE, though rare in humans, is highly dangerous, with a mortality rate of about 30%, and many survivors suffering from ongoing neurological issues.

RIDEM emphasizes the importance of mosquito control measures, urging residents to remove standing water from areas such as clogged gutters and puddles, which serve as breeding grounds. The Asian Tiger Mosquito, a notable daytime biter with a distinctive black and white pattern, should be particularly watched for.

For horse owners, early vaccination against EEE is strongly recommended to protect their animals. The remaining 104 mosquito samples collected statewide tested negative for West Nile Virus, EEE, and Jamestown Canyon Virus.

Online Dating Users Targeted in New Scam, Say Police

The Middletown Police Department has alerted the public about a scam targeting users of online dating sites. Scammers pose as parents claiming the person being communicated with is a minor and demand money to avoid involving the police. In one case, the scammer used a voicemail from a real Middletown detective. The police urge anyone suspecting a scam to hang up and contact their local authorities immediately.

Rhode Island Wineries Can Now Sell Wine Directly to Customers

Rhode Island has passed a new law allowing wineries to sell up to three five-ounce glasses of wine and three 750-milliliter bottles per customer per day directly onsite. This change, sponsored by Senate Majority Whip Valarie Lawson, aims to boost business for local wineries by providing customers with a more immersive experience. Previously, only breweries and distilleries were permitted similar onsite sales.

Celebrate Summer with Fresh, Local Foods

Make the most of summer by visiting your local farmers' markets for the freshest, locally-harvested foods. Enjoy the unbeatable taste of Rhode Island-grown tomatoes, corn, summer squash, lettuce, and blueberries, perfect for complementing a meal of locally-sourced meat or seafood. Shopping at a farmers' market is not only a nutritious choice but also a delightful way to celebrate the bounty of the summer harvest.
