Beachgoers Flock to Narragansett as Temperatures Soar
With temperatures reaching 90 degrees, Narragansett Town Beach saw a surge of visitors. Beachgoers enjoyed the sunny weather and cool breeze, while lifeguards and health officials advised staying hydrated and taking precautions against the heat. The Rhode Island Department of Health recommended staying in shaded areas, wearing light clothing, and avoiding alcohol and caffeine during extreme heat periods.
Rhode Island Strengthens Shoreline Access Protections with New Disclosure Law
Rhode Island has enacted a law requiring sellers of oceanfront properties to disclose public shoreline access rights and related conditions. The legislation, championed by Senator Victoria Gu and Representative Terri Cortvriend, updates the sale disclosure form to include public rights up to 10 feet above the high tide line, any known rights of way, and relevant CRMC permits. This law aims to prevent disputes and protect public access by ensuring that buyers are informed about their entitlements and obligations.
Navy Recognizes Narragansett Tribe with New T-ATS Ship Naming
On the 90th anniversary of the Indian Reorganization Act, Secretary of the Navy Carlos Del Toro announced that a future Navajo-class Towing, Salvage, and Rescue (T-ATS) ship will be named the USNS Narragansett, honoring the Narragansett Indian Tribe of Rhode Island. This ship naming continues the tradition of recognizing prominent Native Americans or tribes. The Narragansett tribe, historically significant in the region, will have a vessel named after them for the sixth time. The USNS Narragansett will provide vital ocean-going tug, salvage, and rescue capabilities for the Navy.
State Department Introduces Online Passport Renewal System
The State Department has introduced an online portal for passport renewals, accepting a limited number of applications daily as part of a trial to streamline the process. This initiative follows President Biden's 2021 executive order aimed at improving government services post-pandemic. The online system is available to U.S. citizens aged 25 and older with a 10-year passport validity, and applicants must not be traveling internationally for at least eight weeks from the application date. A MyTravelGov account is required for the process. The State Department has faced significant criticism for passport processing delays since the COVID-19 pandemic, but it announced in December that processing times have returned to pre-pandemic levels. Expedited requests are not eligible for the online renewal process.
