South Kingstown Teen Collects Over 1,200 Books for Children in Need
Sara Clarke, a 15-year-old from South Kingstown, has spearheaded a book drive resulting in the collection of over 1,200 books for children in need. Motivated by her love of reading and a desire to fulfill community service hours, Clarke conducted research that revealed the widespread issue of illiteracy among children. This spurred her to take action, launching a book drive at Broad Rock Middle School with the help of friends and support from teachers. The drive involved creating posters, making announcements, and placing collection bins around the school.
Clarke meticulously sorted through the donated books, ensuring they were in good condition by removing any writing or stickers. Her initiative caught the attention of the United Way of Rhode Island, which partners with 'Books Are Wings' for their annual statewide book drive. Clarke pledged her collected books to support their efforts.
Through her dedication, Clarke surpassed her initial goal, gathering over 1,200 books in just three weeks. The President and CEO of the United Way of Rhode Island, Cortney Nicolato, praised Clarke’s efforts, highlighting her as a shining example of youth making a positive impact.
The collected books will be distributed to children across Rhode Island before the end of the school year, providing them with valuable resources to foster their love of reading and support their education.
Residents Demand Crosswalk for Safety on Paddy Hill Road
Residents of South Kingstown, particularly from the Paddy Hill Road neighborhood, voiced strong concerns at a recent Town Council meeting about the pressing need for pedestrian safety measures. Lorraine Horton, a lifelong resident, led the call for action, stressing the dangers pedestrians face when crossing Kersey Road. Horton emphasized that the issue extends beyond administrative challenges and financial costs, highlighting the potential for severe accidents if no action is taken.
The problem is most acute where Paddy Hill Road intersects with Kersey Road. While a sidewalk exists on the far side of Kersey Road, the Paddy Hill side lacks both a sidewalk and a safe shoulder, forcing pedestrians to cross the busy road without protection.
“This isn’t just about money or paperwork. This is about lives and real people,” Horton stated, urging the Town Council to instruct the town works department to install a crosswalk promptly.
