Free Pre-Kindergarten Program Lottery Now Accepting Applications
The Rhode Island Department of Education is currently accepting applications for its pre-kindergarten program lottery, which offers families the chance to enroll their children in free, high-quality early childhood education for the upcoming 2024-25 academic year. In an effort to increase access to these vital services, the program has been expanded to include more cities and towns than in recent years.
To be eligible, children must be four years old by September 1st and not yet qualified for kindergarten enrollment. The lottery is open to residents of over 20 municipalities across the state, including South Kingstown.
However, spots in the program are limited, and interested parents must submit their applications by the deadline of June 24th to be considered for the upcoming school year.
Proposed R.I. Law Mandates Public Access Disclosure for Coastal Properties
The Rhode Island General Assembly is currently deliberating on a set of bills that would mandate specific disclosures during the sale of oceanfront properties. These proposed measures are part of a broader effort to safeguard the public's access to the state's shorelines and natural resources. If enacted, sellers would be legally obligated to inform prospective buyers about the "rights and privileges of the shore" that extend to all Rhode Island residents.
This legislative push comes on the heels of a landmark law passed last year that established a 10-foot public access zone inland from the recognizable high tide line, typically marked by a line of seaweed and other debris. The disclosure requirement aims to serve as a crucial consumer protection measure, ensuring transparency for prospective homebuyers who may be unaware of Rhode Island's coastal access laws, particularly those coming from out of state.
