South Kingstown High School and URI Honored for Clean Energy Initiatives

The McKee Administration has honored South Kingstown High School and the University of Rhode Island for their significant contributions to renewable energy and energy efficiency at the Seventh Annual Lead by Example Clean Energy Awards.

Key Highlights:

  • South Kingstown High School: Recognized for its efforts in energy efficiency, contributing to the state's goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.

  • University of Rhode Island: Awarded for installing a large solar carport on the Bay Campus and converting its entire maintenance vehicle fleet to electric low-speed vehicles. These projects are part of URI's commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and improving energy efficiency.

Lead by Example Program:

  • Supports public sector entities in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and energy costs. The program encourages collaboration to meet state-wide clean energy goals.

DEM Launches Summer Outdoor Education Series

The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management’s Division of Fish and Wildlife (DFW) is offering an array of free educational programs this summer, aimed at connecting residents with nature. These programs include fishing days, hunter education classes, and guided wildlife walks.

Aquatic Resource Education Programs

  • Come Clam with Me Workshops: Explore clamming with a hands-on experience led by a commercial quahogger. Dates and locations to be determined, $10 fee for ages 8 and older.

  • Hex Hatch Fly Tying Workshop: Learn about the Hexagenia limbata mayfly hatch and fly tying techniques. Scheduled for June 13 in Exeter.

  • Introduction to Freshwater Fly Fishing: A comprehensive one-day course on fly fishing basics, including equipment and casting, held on June 22 in Burrillville, $30 fee.

Hunter Education Programs

  • Introduction to the Great Swamp Shooting Range: Try out firearms at the Great Swamp Shooting Range on June 22. No prior experience needed.

  • Women’s Day at the Range: A special event for women to learn about firearm safety and shooting, scheduled for August 4.

  • Bowhunter Education Certification Course: A two-day course on archery hunting basics and safety, held on August 22 and 24 in Exeter.

Wildlife Outreach Programs

  • Summer Bat Night: Participate in a bat colony count and learn about bat conservation on June 27 in Richmond.

  • Wildlife Solutions: Veggie Vandals: Learn how to protect your garden from critters and understand local wildlife regulations in a hybrid event on July 2.

  • Summer Dragon Hunt: Discover Rhode Island’s dragonflies and damselflies during a guided hunt in the Great Swamp on July 20.

  • Coexisting with Coyotes: Understand coyote behavior and strategies for coexisting with them in a session on August 6 in Greene.

  • Wildlife Management Areas 101: Get an introduction to Rhode Island’s State Wildlife Management Areas and their rules in a hybrid event on August 21.

Get ready to rewind the clock and step into a blast from the past at our Back to the ’70s, ’80s, and ’90s Karaoke Pottery Painting Event!

Join us on June 1st from 6-8:30pm for an epic journey while we rock it out to the tunes of the 70s, 80s, and 90s unleashing our vocals and artistic vibes on some totally awesome custom pottery.

Free Pickleball Lessons - June 1

If you've been eager to try pickleball or learn how to play, now is your chance! Free beginner pickleball lessons are being offered by top instructors at the Ocean State Pickleball Club.

  • Time: 11:30 AM - 1:00 PM

  • Location: Ocean State Pickleball Club (OSP)

  • Fundamentals of dinking, volleying, serve/return, and the rules of the game
