Route 138 Sewer Main Replacement Scheduled for Night Hours

South Kingstown is set to commence construction for the replacement of a sewer main on Route 138, spanning from Peckham Farm Road to just east of Upper College Road, which connects to the URI campus. To minimize disruption for drivers, the construction work will be conducted at night, from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.

This construction phase is scheduled to take place from May 28 through August, with the installation of the new sewer pipe expected to be completed by the end of this period. The final pavement restoration of the roadway is planned for summer 2025.

The community is advised to exercise caution while using these roadways during the construction period.

Narragansett Town Council Advances 2024-2025 Budget Amid Heated Debate

The Narragansett Town Council approved the first reading of its 2024-2025 budget on Monday night, navigating debates over tax rates and fund allocations. The proposed budget adjusted the 2025 tax rate from $6.84 to $6.61 per thousand dollars of assessed value. Town Manager James Tierney suggested a further reduction to $6.55 by using $585,000 from the unassigned fund balance.

Councilor Deborah Kopech expressed concerns about using the fund balance, comparing it to a rainy-day fund. Discussions also covered funding for a proposed affordable housing bond and the library's budget. Resident Catherine Celeberto suggested increasing senior and veterans exemptions instead of reducing the tax rate.

The appropriation ordinance passed 4-1, with Councilor Susan Cicilline-Buonanno abstaining, a move Council President Ewa Dzwierzynski questioned, emphasizing the budget's importance.
