Honoring Heroes: South Kingstown's Memorial Day Parade
South Kingstown will honor Memorial Day with a parade and ceremony today.
Sponsored by the South Kingstown VFW – Washington County Post 916, the parade will begin at 10:00 a.m., starting on Holly Street in Wakefield, proceeding south onto Main Street, and concluding at Saugatucket Park on High Street. This annual event will feature active and retired military personnel, town dignitaries, local community groups, and the marching bands of South Kingstown High School and Broad Rock Middle School, along with public safety agencies.
Krista Simpson Anderson, a Gold Star Spouse and advocate for veterans and their families, will serve as the Grand Marshal for this year's parade. Anderson’s husband, Green Beret SSG Michael H. Simpson, made the ultimate sacrifice in service to his country. In his honor, Anderson has dedicated herself to supporting Gold Star families and veterans through organizations like The Unquiet Professional and the Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (TAPS).
Following the parade, a memorial ceremony will be held at the Saugatucket Park Veterans Monument at 11:00 a.m.
The ceremony, led by Master of Ceremonies Joe “Tiger” Patrick of VFW 916, will include remarks by Krista Simpson Anderson, Senator Jack Reed, and Pastor Keith Mlyneic of The Harbor Church. The event will also feature performances by The Wakefield Concert Band and the South Kingstown High School Band, and will culminate in a wreath-laying ceremony, an Honor Guard Gun Salute, and Taps.
The community is invited to join in this day of remembrance and unity. Main Street will be closed to parking from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. to allow for public viewing of the parade. Following the memorial ceremony, refreshments will be available at the Elks Lodge 1899, located at 60 Belmont Street, Wakefield.
