South Kingstown Enhances Pedestrian Safety with Crosswalk Flags
The South Kingstown Police Department has introduced pedestrian safety flags at three critical crosswalks in town to enhance pedestrian safety. The flags are now available at the intersections of Route 138 and South Road, Kingstown Road at Old Mountain Field, and South Road and the South County Bike Path. This initiative aims to increase driver awareness and encourage yielding to pedestrians, particularly as the summer season approaches.
Chief of Police Matthew C. Moynihan highlighted the effectiveness of these flags, noting that drivers are more likely to stop for pedestrians who are holding a flag or standing near a crosswalk with one. The decision to install these flags at these specific locations was based on departmental data indicating that pedestrians at these crosswalks would benefit most from this visual aid.
The pedestrian flags are a component of the broader #SafeSummerSK initiative, which also includes efforts to address impaired driving, speeding, distracted driving, and overall road safety for both pedestrians and cyclists.
