South Kingstown Farmer Pleads for End to Rabbit Dumping in Tuckertown Park

Ian Stewart, owner of Stewart Nursery, is appealing to the South Kingstown community to cease releasing rabbits in Tuckertown Park.
This practice, intended to be humane, is causing significant damage to his family’s 91-year-old nursery business.
Stewart noticed an unusual increase in large, well-fed rabbits about ten years ago, which have since caused thousands of dollars in damage by stripping bark from trees during the winter months.
The problem became clear when a local resident mentioned releasing 26 rabbits in the park.
Relocating wildlife is illegal in Rhode Island, but Stewart seeks a practical solution rather than punishment for violators.
He is urging the town to install signs discouraging the dumping of animals and is exploring other measures to mitigate the damage

South Kingstown Police Introduce Summer Safety Campaign

The South Kingstown Police Department has unveiled its #SafeSummerSK initiative, aimed at enhancing road safety during the high-risk summer months.
With longer days and warmer weather, the summer period can be particularly hazardous for drivers, especially younger ones.
Chief of Police Matthew C. Moynihan announced that the department will increase patrols and disseminate public safety messages to help prevent traffic fatalities.
The focus will be on curbing impaired and distracted driving, controlling speed, and ensuring everyone uses seatbelts.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the months of June, July, and August see the highest number of traffic fatalities.
The #SafeSummerSK initiative will also include efforts to promote safety among bicyclists, motorcyclists, and pedestrians.
Chief Moynihan emphasized the importance of community participation in maintaining road safety, urging drivers to be extra cautious and to provide adequate space for pedestrians, bicycles, and motorcycles.
