Overnight Milling and Paving to Begin on Route 1

The Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) has scheduled overnight roadwork on Route 1, also known as Tower Hill Road. The project will involve alternating lane closures for milling and paving operations.

Starting on Sunday nights and continuing through Thursday nights, from 9 PM to 6 AM, crews will work on the stretch of road between Stedman Government Center and Shermantown Road. This nighttime schedule is intended to minimize disruption to daytime traffic.

DEM Urges Rhode Islanders Not to Disturb Young Wildlife

The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (DEM) has issued a reminder to the public not to interfere with baby animals found in the wild, particularly fawns, during the months of May and June. This period is when white-tailed deer typically give birth, and it is normal for fawns to be left alone, concealed in grass or brush, while their mothers feed nearby.

The DEM emphasizes that moving or handling fawns can permanently separate them from their mothers, significantly reducing their chances of survival. Despite appearances, a lone fawn is rarely abandoned; the mother is usually nearby and will return to care for it.

Fawns are naturally camouflaged and have little scent, making them less detectable to predators. They remain motionless as a survival strategy. Residents are advised to avoid creating disturbances near these young animals and to refrain from handling them.

In the rare event that a fawn is found in immediate danger, such as lying in a roadway, the DEM advises observing from a safe distance and contacting their Division of Law Enforcement for guidance. Removing a fawn from the wild is illegal in Rhode Island, and captive deer often face numerous challenges, including malnutrition and difficulty adjusting to the wild.
