Shellfishing Halted in South County Salt Ponds Due to Heavy Rainfall

Following significant rainfall in Washington County, the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (DEM) has temporarily closed several shellfishing areas along the south coast.
The closure, which includes Pt. Judith Pond and Potter Pond, is a precautionary measure due to the increased bacteria levels observed after heavy rains.
The affected areas are expected to reopen on May 23, once water quality returns to safe levels.

Kingston’s Compass School Announces Plant Sale on May 17

The Compass School, a K-8 charter institution, will host its annual plant sale at the school's farm stand and greenhouse on Friday, May 17. The event, which marks the grand opening of the farm stand, will run from 3:30 PM until dusk at 537 Old North Road in Kingston, RI.

The sale features a variety of plants grown from hand-collected heirloom and organic seeds. Offerings include soil blocks for $1 each, small pots and 4-packs for $2 each, and large pots for $3 each. The soil used is hand-mixed, ensuring high quality and care.

The event specializes in rare, unusual, and kid-friendly plant species. All proceeds from the sale directly support the school's Farm programs, which are integral to the school's educational mission.

The community is invited to come out and support this initiative, which not only promotes sustainable gardening but also enhances the school's hands-on learning experiences for students.
