President Biden Declares Major Disasters in Rhode Island, Authorizes Federal Aid

On March 20, 2024, President Biden announced the declaration of two major disasters in Rhode Island, resulting from severe weather events that occurred in December 17 - 19, 2023 and January 9 - 12, 2024.
The federal government will provide assistance to support recovery efforts in the affected areas, specifically in the counties of Kent, Providence, and Washington. The assistance package will offer grants for housing and repairs, low-interest loans for uninsured property losses, and other programs to help individuals and businesses recover. Additionally, federal funding will be allocated for hazard mitigation measures throughout the state. Those who have sustained losses in the designated areas are encouraged to apply for assistance.

Narragansett Town Beach Seeks Volunteers for Grass Planting and Shoreline Cleanup

In response to the damage caused by storms in December and January, Save The Bay, in partnership with the Town of Narragansett, is coordinating a beach grass planting and cleanup effort at Narragansett Town Beach.
The initiative, taking place on April 17, 18, and 19, will focus on planting American beach grass in the affected dunes to help with sand capture and dune formation, as well as clearing the shoreline of storm debris. Volunteers are invited to register for one or more shifts, with a requirement that those participating in the planting be 16 years of age or older. Pre-registration is mandatory, and service hour confirmation letters will be available upon request.

Pell Bridge Construction Rescheduled

The construction project on the Pell Bridge ramp, which was slated to begin this weekend, has been postponed as a result of adverse weather conditions forecasted for the area. The lane closures on Route 138, which runs east and west between the Pell Bridge and JT Connell Highway, have been rescheduled to start on Friday, April 5, at 5 p.m., with the work expected to be completed by the morning of April 8. Drivers should be prepared for left lane closures and possible additional delays while the road work is being carried out.
