Narragansett Residents Clash with URI Students Over Proposed Housing Bill

The proposed bill in the Rhode Island House aims to change the current law that allows local ordinances to set a minimum limit of three unrelated individuals living together in a single-family home.

Sponsored by Rep. Jacquelyn Baginski, the bill would raise this limit to five people or one person per bedroom.

The legislation is intended to alleviate the housing crisis and has received support from URI students and landlords in Narragansett.

However, some local residents and the town itself oppose the bill, arguing it would disrupt community balance and infringe on municipal autonomy.

Tick-Borne Diseases a Concern as Ticks Emerge Early in Rhode Island

Due to a mild El Niño winter, ticks are active earlier than usual in Rhode Island, posing a risk of spreading diseases such as Lyme disease, babesiosis, and ehrlichiosis.

The state has several tick species, including the American dog tick and black-legged tick. Diagnosing tick-borne illnesses can be challenging, with symptoms often delayed and resembling those of a cold or flu.

The CDC recommends protective measures such as wearing appropriate clothing and using tick repellents, as well as prompt removal and cleaning if a tick is found.

Local Police to Intensify DUI Enforcement for St. Patrick's Day Weekend

The local Police Departments and the Rhode Island State Police are stepping up traffic enforcement for St. Patrick's Day weekend, focusing on drunk driving prevention.

The enforcement will take place from March 15 to March 17, with continuous monitoring. Last year's efforts resulted in numerous DUI arrests and speeding tickets.
Officials are advising people to plan for a sober ride home.
