People's Credit Union Eyes New Branch in South Kingstown at Former Pub Site
People's Credit Union, with its headquarters in Middletown, is proposing to expand its presence in South Kingstown by constructing a new branch in the Wakefield area.
The credit union has submitted a pre-application to the town's Planning Board to replace the old Bobby G's Pub at 703 Kingstown Road with a modern 2,816-square-foot facility, complete with three drive-thru ATM lanes.
The project will cover a 0.7-acre site owned by 703 Kingstown Road LLC. The Planning Board is set to review the conceptual plans.
The credit union's existing branch near the Wakefield Mall's parking lot at 150 Old Tower Hill Road remains unaddressed in the proposal.
South Kingstown Seeks Engaged Residents for Planning and Zoning Boards
The Town of South Kingstown is inviting applications from residents interested in serving on the town's Planning Board and Zoning Board of Review. There is one vacancy on the Planning Board and two vacancies for alternate members on the Zoning Board.
Detailed information about these positions, along with other open roles on various town boards and committees, can be found on the town's website. Application forms are available and should be submitted to the Town Clerk's Office.
To be eligible for these positions, applicants must be registered voters in South Kingstown.
Rhode Island Voters: Register or Disaffiliate by March 3 for Presidential Primary
The Rhode Island Department of State is alerting eligible voters to the upcoming deadlines for the state's presidential preference primary election scheduled for April 2, 2024.
To be eligible to vote in the primary, residents must either register or disaffiliate by March 3.
Voter registration can be completed in person, online, or at local board of canvassers' offices, while disaffiliation can be done online or by contacting local board of canvassers' offices.
Rhode Island's Housing Crisis: From Bad to Disaster as Building Permits Hit New Low
Rhode Island's housing crisis has reached a critical point, with the state issuing the fewest building permits per capita in the nation in 2023. The decline in new housing permits from over 7,000 per year in the late 1980s to fewer than 1,200 in 2023 has contributed to a market imbalance, driving home prices to record highs.
The state's efforts to allocate funds for housing programs have yet to yield significant results, as restrictive zoning laws and neighborhood opposition, often referred to as "NIMBYism," (Not In My Back Yard) prevent new construction.
