Narragansett Police Alert Community to Home Improvement Scams
The Narragansett Police Department cautions the community, especially seniors, about a recent scam involving home repairs. An elderly resident's experience with fraudulent contractors who fled after partial work underscores a broader pattern of deceit.
In the wake of these incidents, Chief Corrigan has called for heightened awareness and due diligence in engaging contractors for home improvement tasks. To combat such fraudulent activities, the police department has disseminated practical guidance from the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), emphasizing the importance of selecting only licensed and insured contractors, verifying their legitimacy, and obtaining multiple written estimates before committing to any services. The FTC strongly advises against full upfront payments for projects, suggesting instead a structured payment plan contingent upon the completion of the work.
Deadline Approaching for URI Preschool Lottery Applications
The University of Rhode Island's Child Development Center is opening its preschool enrollment lottery for the upcoming school year, seeking applications for children between the ages of three and five.
The program, acclaimed for its adherence to national education standards for young children, emphasizes a play-based, exploratory approach to learning.
Interested families must apply by the February 23deadline, ensuring their child meets the age requirement by the start of September.
Urgent Call for Blood Donations After Storm Shuts Down Rhode Island Centers
The Rhode Island Blood Center urgently calls for blood donations after the snowstorm forced the closure of all donation centers, leading to a significant loss of nearly 400 donations.
To book an appointment to donate blood, community members can contact the Rhode Island Blood Center at (401) 453-8383 or schedule online at ribc.org.
