Statewide Public Hearings to Review RIPTA's Proposed Bus Service Overhaul

RIPTA announced public hearings in February 2024 to address proposed service changes on 33 bus routes in response to a longstanding driver shortage. These changes include route eliminations, frequency adjustments, and impacts on ADA services, with the aim of aligning services with current staffing levels and improving reliability.

Local routes that will be impacted are 14, 64, 65x and 69.

A local hearing will take place on Monday, February 19, 2024 at URI Memorial Union, Room 360, 50 Lower College Road, Kingston 12:30pm – 2pm & 5:30pm – 7pm

Proposed Jug Handles on Route 4 Stir Controversy Among Residents

The Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) is considering a major overhaul of Route 4, a key artery leading to several of the state's beaches, to address persistent traffic congestion. The proposed changes involve the introduction of "jug handles" at three congested intersections along this heavily trafficked route.

According to RIDOT data, Route 4 experiences traffic volumes tenfold higher than its intersecting side streets. The targeted intersections for this project are Oak Hill, West Allenton, and Tower Hill roads. The plan would convert these intersections into right-turn-only junctions, with the jug handles facilitating access to the opposite sides of the roadway.

Despite RIDOT's claims that these modifications would significantly alleviate traffic, particularly during the busy summer months, the proposal has met with skepticism and opposition from local residents. The $9 million project will be reconsidered following community feedback.
