Severe Storms Lead to Unprecedented Erosion Along Rhode Island's Southern Shore
Recent storms have led to severe erosion along Rhode Island's coast, the worst since Superstorm Sandy, according to coastal geologist Janet Freedman. The damage includes eroded beaches, destroyed roads, and damaged infrastructure in South Kingstown, Westerly, Narragansett, and Charlestown. The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management is concerned about the vulnerability of coastal homes and businesses to future storms, particularly in areas like Sand Hill Cove where natural barriers have eroded.
While some natural recovery is expected, the long-term outlook is concerning due to the anticipated increase in storm frequency and intensity.
