Coastal Crisis: Erosion Threatens Homes Near Roger Wheeler Beach

Back-to-back storms have caused significant beach erosion in South County particularly affecting Roger Wheeler State Beach and nearby properties.
Several beachfront homes are at risk of collapsing, with up to six feet of erosion observed in some areas.
Local residents, alarmed by the unprecedented damage, are urging for immediate action to safeguard the beach and the integrity of their homes.

RIEMA Seeks Damage Reports Post Severe Weather for Federal Aid Assessment

RIEMA is gathering data on the impact of the severe weather event from January 9-11 and 12-14 through an initial damage assessment form available on their website. The information collected will help determine if Rhode Island qualifies for Federal reimbursement and explore the possibility of a Small Business Administration disaster declaration. The form enables homeowners and businesses to report physical and economic damages, aiding in accurate documentation of expenses for disaster response and recovery.

Efforts to Curb Plastic Pollution in Rhode Island: The Case for a Bottle Bill

Despite efforts to reduce plastic waste, Rhode Island continues to struggle with a high rate of plastics ending up in landfills. Significant environmental impacts have been observed, including in Narragansett Bay. The state faces a critical decision regarding waste management as landfill capacity nears its limit. Advocates for a bottle bill hope to see it implemented to increase recycling and reduce litter, but legislative action has been slow, with a study commission currently considering the issue.
