Governor McKee Declares Disaster Emergency in Wake of Flooding

Following Tuesday's severe rainstorms and subsequent flooding, Governor Dan McKee responded by signing a Declaration of Disaster Emergency.
This measure is a critical component in the state's recovery process, offering support and resources to those impacted. The declaration represents a commitment to rapid recovery and assistance.
The governor also emphasized the importance of damage reporting, encouraging affected residents to notify the Rhode Island Emergency Management Agency through its website, ensuring a thorough response to the disaster.

Rhode Island's DEM Announces Shellfish Area Closures Due to Storm Runoff

Following a heavy rainstorm in Rhode Island, the Department of Environmental Management announced the closure of various shellfish areas in Point Judith Pond for seven days, with a reopening scheduled for January 17.
The intense rainfall, which registered up to 5 inches in some areas, resulted in runoff and combined sewer overflows, raising concerns about bacterial contamination.
The DEM, in collaboration with other state departments and industry partners, will conduct water quality tests to ensure the safety of shellfish before reopening the areas.
This closure is part of Rhode Island's rigorous approach to maintaining the quality and safety of its shellfish products.
