New Legal Battle Over Shoreline Access Unfolds in Rhode Island Courts
Two separate lawsuits are challenging the state's shoreline access law in Washington County Superior Court.
These cases follow a new state law defining public shoreline access boundaries, which has been contested by coastal property owners.
The first lawsuit, filed by Stilts LLC, and a second by Westerly homeowners David and Linda Roth, both argue that the law constitutes an unconstitutional taking of private property.
Legal experts note the shift from federal to state court may allow for a more in-depth examination of the issues. As the Attorney General’s office prepares its response, an eventual appeal to the Rhode Island Supreme Court is expected, potentially settling the ongoing debate over shoreline access rights.

The University of Rhode Island men's basketball team emerged victorious against Davidson College with a 79-74 win, marking their third consecutive victory. Luis Kortright's standout performance, including a career-high 26 points and critical free throws, played a pivotal role in the win. The Rams displayed tactical acumen and resilience, maintaining their lead despite several runs by Davidson. This win reinforces Rhode Island's strong start in the Atlantic 10 conference, as they continue to build momentum in the season.
