South Kingstown Receives Key Funding in State’s $5.9 Million Community Development Initiative

The Rhode Island Department of Housing, under Governor Dan McKee's administration, announced the allocation of $5.9 million in grants to 14 cities and towns for community development, with a focus on housing and infrastructure improvements for low- and moderate-income individuals.

In South Kingstown, a significant portion of this funding is being allocated for community enhancements. The town is receiving $250,000 to renovate the parking lot of the local Senior Center, aiming to improve accessibility and safety for visitors. Furthermore, the Jonnycake Center for Hope Food Pantry in South Kingstown is being awarded $40,000 to procure food supplies for the Jonnycake Market. An additional grant of $25,000 is designated to support the meal preparation activities of the WARM-Welcome House of Peace Dale, reinforcing the town’s commitment to addressing the needs of its residents.

South Kingstown to See Major Educational Upgrades in State's $1 Billion School Construction Plan

Rhode Island's education council has sanctioned over $1 billion for school construction projects.

In South Kingstown, the funding will be instrumental in constructing a new South Kingstown High School and renovating the Hazard Building, as well as several elementary and middle schools.

This initiative will impact 2,348 students in the district, fostering enhanced learning environments and opportunities, part of a state-wide effort to upgrade educational facilities to 21st-century standards.

Housing Policy Shift in Narragansett: New Limits on Unrelated Occupants in Homes

Narragansett's Town Council has passed an ordinance reducing the allowable number of unrelated individuals in a single-family home from four to three, aiming for consistency with its college student housing policy.
This decision, opposed by the Planning Board and others, seeks to deter housing investors and promote family residency but may increase housing demand and reduce affordability.

The state's zoning law permits such limitations, but the ordinance's broader impact on the housing crisis and traditional family definitions are under scrutiny.

Rhode Island Under State of Emergency Following Destructive Storm

Governor Dan McKee has issued a Declaration of Disaster Emergency for Rhode Island due to a recent storm's devastating impact, including high winds, severe rainfall, and consequential flooding and power outages. This declaration is intended to bolster recovery operations and may help the state qualify for federal relief. The Rhode Island Emergency Management Agency is actively assessing the damage in collaboration with local municipalities.
