Concerns Arise in South Kingstown Over Upcoming State Zoning Mandates

The South Kingstown Town Council unanimously agreed to write to the General Assembly about new state zoning laws effective January 1.
These laws aim to streamline development processes but require changes to the town's zoning ordinance.

The council is concerned about the impact on local development, particularly regarding affordable housing and community character.

The new laws lower the approval threshold for zoning changes and direct all land use appeals to Superior Court.

Single-Use Plastic Bag Ban to Take Effect Across Rhode Island

The Plastic Waste Reduction Act, prohibiting single-use plastic bags in retail stores, will be effective in Rhode Island from January 1, 2024. The DEM has been working to ensure industry compliance and public awareness.
The act aligns with existing bans in several Rhode Island communities and is part of a larger effort to combat plastic pollution and encourage sustainable practices.

Dog Owners Advised to Avoid Communal Pet Areas Amid Disease Outbreak

The Rhode Island’s DEM is urging dog owners to prevent their pets from interacting with other dogs.
The illness, a highly contagious and severe respiratory disease affecting dogs, which has been reported in several states, is more severe than typical respiratory infections and has led to a few fatalities.

The disease is linked to dogs mingling in communal areas. Veterinarians across the state are collaborating to identify the disease, with most dogs expected to recover fully.
