Nearly 1 in 3 RI Households Now Face Food Insecurity

As the season of giving approaches, we're reaching out to our community for a collective effort to support the Rhode Island Community Food Bank.
Our goal is ambitious but attainable: we hope to raise $1,000 to aid in their crucial work.

The Food Bank is a cornerstone in the struggle against hunger, providing sustenance to over 63,000 residents of our state each month through a robust network of 140 partner agencies, including food pantries and various programs that feed the young and vulnerable.

Our commitment to eliminating hunger is steadfast, and we invite you to stand with us.

A donation of any amount can help move us toward a future where no Rhode Islander faces the uncertainty of their next meal.

Boost Your Community: Join South Kingstown's Extended Small Business Saturday

In the spirit of community and local enterprise, South Kingstown Insider is extending an invitation to all residents to support the fabric of the town's economy by participating in the "Small Business Weekend." This initiative, starting on Black Friday and running through Cyber Monday, is set to galvanize the local economy by encouraging residents to shop within their community.

Marking a departure from the single-day event, Small Business Saturday, which falls on November 25 this year, the extended weekend aims to spotlight the small businesses that contribute to our town's unique character. These establishments, ranging from corner stores to chic boutiques and cozy restaurants, are a vital thread in the communal tapestry, and their prosperity is integral to our collective success.

Residents can engage with and promote their favorite local businesses by sharing their experiences on social media with the hashtags #ShopSmall, #SmallBizSat and #SouthKingstownInsider, effectively creating a groundswell of support. As an added incentive, participating businesses will offer special promotions throughout the weekend.

By choosing to shop small, South Kingstown's citizens will be contributing to job creation, economic growth, and the preservation of the vibrant neighborhoods that define this community.

Governor McKee Selects Bryant Da Cruz for Ethics Commission Role

Governor Dan McKee has nominated Bryant Da Cruz, a respected Realtor and past President of the Rhode Island Association of Realtors, to the Rhode Island Ethics Commission.
Da Cruz, known for his extensive service in various professional and community roles, including as a volunteer firefighter and former Vice President of the South Kingstown Town Council, has accepted the nomination with a pledge to serve with integrity.

South Kingstown Police Join Regional Effort to Prevent DUI Incidents

South Kingstown police are collaborating with several local law enforcement agencies to intensify DUI enforcement around Thanksgiving, a period notorious for a spike in impaired driving.
The initiative, spearheaded by Lt. Don Barrington of the North Kingstown Police Department, includes heightened patrols and checkpoints designed to identify and deter drivers under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or marijuana.

Penalties for DUI convictions in Rhode Island are severe, with potential jail time, license suspension, and hefty fines.

As South Kingstown's DUI arrests remain high, with over 111 arrests made in the current year alone, local authorities, including Police Chief Matthew C. Moynihan, are urging the community to make responsible choices and avoid driving while impaired.

Rhode Island Wind Farm Faces Legal Pushback Over Environmental Concerns

The Preservation Society of Newport County is appealing a recent federal decision that greenlights the construction of the Revolution Wind project off the Rhode Island coast.
The group contends that the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) did not adhere to the stipulations of the National Environmental Policy Act and the National Historic Preservation Act when it gave the project the go-ahead.

The Society, while supportive of renewable energy, argues that the project could lead to the installation of wind turbines as near as 12 miles from the coast, potentially impacting the area's unique character and historic integrity.

Food Bank Report: Nearly 1 in 3 RI Households Now Face Food Insecurity

The Rhode Island Community Food Bank’s 2023 status report finds over 29% of state households unable to reliably afford food, a crisis level. Among children and communities of color, rates climb even higher.

CEO Schiff says from January to September 2023, the network served a “staggering” monthly average of 77,500 people – many working but still struggling after paying rising rents and utilities without COVID aid offsets.

Restoring free school meals statewide could also help children avoid hunger after falling enrollment post-universal meal program conclusion indicates obstacles. Food bank distributions hit record highs as prices also rose 11% regionally in a year.

A donation of any amount can help move us toward a future where no Rhode Islander faces the uncertainty of their next meal.
