Fighting Hunger Together with the Rhode Island Community Food Bank
As the season of giving approaches, we're reaching out to our community for a collective effort to support the Rhode Island Community Food Bank.
Our goal is ambitious but attainable: we hope to raise $1,000 to aid in their crucial work.
The Food Bank is a cornerstone in the struggle against hunger, providing sustenance to over 63,000 residents of our state each month through a robust network of 140 partner agencies, including food pantries and various programs that feed the young and vulnerable.
Our commitment to eliminating hunger is steadfast, and we invite you to stand with us.
A donation of any amount can help move us toward a future where no Rhode Islander faces the uncertainty of their next meal.
Together, we can fortify our community and ensure that the pangs of hunger are met with the comfort of community care.
Thank You To

Rising Environmental Concern as Invasive Hydrilla Found in South Kingstown's Worden Pond
In a concerning ecological development, Rhode Island's largest lake, Worden Pond in South Kingstown, is now grappling with an invasion of Hydrilla verticillata, an aggressive and damaging aquatic plant.
This discovery by the Department of Environmental Management (DEM) marks the third Rhode Island waterbody to face this threat.
Hydrilla, notorious for its rapid growth and ability to reproduce in multiple ways, can drastically alter habitats, hinder recreational activities, and impact local economies.
The plant, which can propagate from even small fragments, poses a significant challenge, particularly as it can easily hitchhike on recreational equipment. Recognizing the urgency, the DEM is actively promoting responsible practices among boaters and anglers, urging them to rigorously clean their gear and adhere to specific preventative measures. These efforts are crucial in curbing the spread of hydrilla, which is now entering a seasonal phase of diminished growth.
Public Warned as Toxic Algae Infests South Kingstown's Indian Lake
A health alert has been issued by the Rhode Island Department of Health and the Department of Environmental Management regarding the presence of toxic blue-green algae blooms in Indian Lake, South Kingstown. The blooms, identified as cyanobacteria, have been found to produce dangerous toxins.
As a precaution, all recreational activities including swimming, fishing, and boating should be avoided. Ingesting water from the lake or consuming fish caught there is strongly discouraged.
Pet owners are also warned to prevent their pets from interacting with the lake water. The advisory, effective until further notice, highlights health risks such as skin irritation, gastrointestinal issues, and in severe cases, liver and nervous system damage. The public is advised to seek medical attention if they experience symptoms after contact with the lake and to practice safe disposal of yard waste to prevent further nutrient enrichment of the water, which can exacerbate algae blooms.
Narragansett Library Delayed
A key facet of Narragansett's anticipated new town library has encountered delays, pushing the project's overall completion timeline into next year.
At a town council meeting this week, the town manager revealed contractors have requested an extension on the original December 13 deadline for installing all shelves in the new facility. They are now aiming for January 31 instead.
Further details will likely emerge on when an inaugural opening celebration can finally occur.
Food Bank Report: Nearly 1 in 3 RI Households Now Face Food Insecurity
The Rhode Island Community Food Bank’s 2023 status report finds over 29% of state households unable to reliably afford food, a crisis level. Among children and communities of color, rates climb even higher.
CEO Schiff says from January to September 2023, the network served a “staggering” monthly average of 77,500 people – many working but still struggling after paying rising rents and utilities without COVID aid offsets.
Restoring free school meals statewide could also help children avoid hunger after falling enrollment post-universal meal program conclusion indicates obstacles. Food bank distributions hit record highs as prices also rose 11% regionally in a year.
A donation of any amount can help move us toward a future where no Rhode Islander faces the uncertainty of their next meal.
