Fighting Hunger Together with the Rhode Island Community Food Bank
As the season of giving approaches, we're reaching out to our community for a collective effort to support the Rhode Island Community Food Bank.
Our goal is ambitious but attainable: we hope to raise $1,000 to aid in their crucial work.
The Food Bank is a cornerstone in the struggle against hunger, providing sustenance to over 63,000 residents of our state each month through a robust network of 140 partner agencies, including food pantries and various programs that feed the young and vulnerable.
Our commitment to eliminating hunger is steadfast, and we invite you to stand with us.
A donation of any amount can help move us toward a future where no Rhode Islander faces the uncertainty of their next meal.
Together, we can fortify our community and ensure that the pangs of hunger are met with the comfort of community care.
Thank You To

Gifts of Joy: Narragansett Police Collect for Toys for Tots
The seasonal campaign by the Narragansett Police aims to gather holiday gifts for children who might otherwise go without.
The initiative, part of a nationwide effort led by the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve, aligns with the program's long-standing mission to deliver a message of hope to less fortunate youngsters through the gift of a new toy.
A donation box is available in the lobby of the police station, and Police Chief Sean Corrigan has emphasized the community's role in bringing joy and fostering a spirit of giving during the festive period.
Blue-Green Algae Levels Subside, Worden Pond Advisory Rescinded
The Rhode Island Department of Health (RIDOH) and the Department of Environmental Management (DEM) have rescinded the health advisory for Worden Pond in South Kingstown after tests revealed diminished levels of blue-green algae.
While the immediate risk has subsided, health and environmental officials caution the public to remain vigilant, as such algal blooms can reoccur rapidly and pose health risks.
They advise against contact with any waterbody that exhibits signs of blue-green algae, recognizable by bright green coloring or a dense, paint-like surface layer.
Narragansett Council Reopens Debate on Sewer Waiver Linked to Affordable Housing
The council had been divided on a proposal that would allow a property on Point Judith Road to connect to a private sewer line, potentially facilitating the construction of an eight-unit building with three affordable housing units.
The initial vote ended in a stalemate, with one council member absent. Council President Ewa Dzwierzynski, advocating for increasing affordable housing, has moved to bring the issue back for reconsideration.
The council has since voted to rescind the tie, opening the path for a new vote.
Councilor Steven Ferrandi, who opposed the rescinding motion, expressed concerns about bypassing town regulations for development. If the council approves the waiver in the upcoming meeting, the plan will be sent to the Planning and Zoning Board for further evaluation.
RAMS
Women's Basketball
URI 67, Brown 56
Rhode Island Women’s Basketball visit to Brown proved successful as the team exhibited control throughout the game.
Mayé Touré's 22-point game stood out as she spearheaded the Rams' offense, bolstered by freshman Sophia Vital's pivotal plays in the fourth quarter, which included seven points and vital defensive plays.
Brown attempted a comeback, narrowing the gap late in the game, but Rhode Island's flawless free-throw shooting in the final minutes sealed their triumph.
URI 58, NC State 67
Rhode Island Women's Basketball showed formidable spirit against NC State, maintaining a lead into the third quarter thanks to consistent scoring from Mayé Touré and key baskets from Hyman and Sophie Phillips. Despite leading at halftime and entering the final quarter with a slim margin, Rhode Island's defense crumbled in the face of NC State's aggressive final period, highlighted by a decisive 14-2 run that secured the host's victory.
Men's Basketball
URI 61, Northwestern 72
The Rams struggled to find their rhythm early on, with an initial shooting performance of just 1-for-18 from the field, which led to a significant early deficit. Northwestern capitalized on this, mounting a 22-2 lead.
Rhode Island began to claw back into the game with a 9-0 run, sparked by Luis Kortright and Zek Montgomery, and closed the first half strong to cut the lead to seven.
A second-half resurgence saw the Rams inch the deficit down to nine points, but a scoring drought allowed Northwestern to maintain their distance, sealing Rhode Island's fate.
URI 57, Washington St 78
Washington State's advantage in the paint was a key factor in Rhode Island's loss, with the Cougars capitalizing on their height to score 52 points close to the basket.
Isaac Jones of Washington State was particularly effective, hitting 8-of-11 shots.
While both teams initially shot well, Rhode Island's turnover troubles gave Washington State extra opportunities, which they converted into points. The second half saw the Rams' shooting cool significantly, further sealing their fate in the contest.
