Norpak Relocates to South Kingstown with $14.5M Investment, Boosting Local Job Market and Economy

The R.I. Commerce Corp. approved Norpak LLC's application for the R.I. Qualified Jobs Incentive Act, supporting the New Jersey-based food packaging firm's relocation to South Kingstown.

Norpak is taking over a 20-acre site near the University of Rhode Island and plans a $14.5 million investment in renovations. In return for tax credits, Norpak will create at least 40 jobs by 2026, and 75 by 2027, offering a total tax credit of $768,000 over a decade.

The company, known for producing food-grade coated paper products, expects to start production in 2025. The move is projected to bring $6 million in economic benefits to Rhode Island by 2027.

South Kingstown Emerges as 9th Richest Town in Rhode Island

South Kingstown ranks 9th in Rhode Island's Richest Towns with a median household income of $102,242, per capita income at $42,080, and single-family house prices averaging $585,000.

Data sourced from the 2021 U.S. Census Bureau's American Community Survey and the September 2023 report of the Rhode Island Association of Realtors.

Decline in Rhode Island's Iconic Quahogs Sparks Statewide Investigation

Rhode Island officials, scientists, and fishermen are investigating the decreasing numbers of quahogs, a clam species deeply rooted in the state's history and designated as the official "Rhode Island State Shell."

Possible reasons for the decline include environmental factors, such as oxygen levels and climate change. Harvesting rates have seen significant drops, with fewer fishermen pursuing quahogs and fewer clams being found.

Quahogs, essential for the ecosystem due to their filtering abilities, are under scrutiny, with a commission set to report findings by May 31, 2024.

Red Cross Offers Halloween Safety Tips

The American Red Cross has provided safety guidelines for Halloween celebrations. For children trick-or-treating:

1. Opt for face paint instead of masks for better vision.
2. Equip kids with flashlights and add reflective tape to costumes.
3. Choose flame-resistant costumes.
4. Avoid costumes with long trailing fabric.
5. Always have adults accompany young children.
6. Be wary around animals.
7. Walk, don't run.
8. Only approach homes with porch lights on and don't enter homes.
9. Use sidewalks or walk facing traffic if none are available.
10. Drive cautiously, especially near crosswalks.
11. Adults should inspect candy for hazards.

For homeowners:
1. Ensure your property is well-lit.
2. Clear sidewalks of leaves and potential tripping hazards.
