Phantom Hackers Target Senior Citizens, Over $542 Million Lost in Scams, Warns FBI
The FBI reports a surge in "phantom hackers" targeting senior citizens in the U.S., with losses exceeding $542 million between January and June.
There are three main schemes: scammers posing as customer support asking victims to download software, thereby accessing bank accounts; fraudsters pretending to be financial institution employees, asking victims to transfer money to a "secure" government account; and scammers impersonating the federal government via convincing emails or letters.
Cybersecurity experts urge tech-savvy individuals to educate their elders and recommend a skeptical approach to any suspicious messages or requests. The FBI's website offers more information on prevalent scams.
