South Kingstown and Washington County Faces Declining Home Affordability
Homeownership in Narragansett, South Kingstown, and other parts of Washington County is becoming less affordable, according to a new report from ATTOM.
The study found that 99% of counties analyzed showed homes and condos being less affordable than historical averages. Factors like Federal Reserve interest rate hikes have driven up mortgage costs.
Washington County's median home cost was $565,000. Average wage earners would need to earn $59,228 annually and spend 66.3% of their income on mortgages to afford such a home.
The report also highlighted a 5% decrease in median home sale prices in the county and an increase in homeownership expenses by 35%.
South Kingstown Schools Outperform State Average in RICAS Scores
In 2023, Rhode Island's elementary and middle school students' standardized test scores saw a slight increase but still lag behind pre-pandemic levels.
The state's proficiency rates were 30% for Math and 33.1% for English Language Arts.
Local South Kingstown schools outperformed the state average:
Broad Rock Middle School scored 55.5% in Math and 49.1% in English
West Kingston Elementary School had 47.3% in Math and 43.2% in English
Matunuck Elementary scored 62.0% in Math and 55.2% in English
Peace Dale Elementary recorded 44.4% in Math and 47.1% in English.
Rhode Island DEM Cracks Down on Poaching: Violator Caught Exceeding Fishing Limits
Rhode Island's Department of Environmental Management (DEM) warns about poaching and fishing regulations after an anonymous tip led them to a violator.
The individual was found hiding fish over the daily limit in the bushes. Potential charges include possession of undersized and oversized striped bass, exceeding possession limits, and possession of undersized tautog.
DEM emphasizes the importance of following fishing regulations for the health of the fisheries. Environmental Police Officers are actively monitoring compliance along Rhode Island's coastline.

Rhode Island and Brown Battle to Intense Scoreless Draw; Rodriguez Shines in Goal
Rhode Island and Brown football teams played to a scoreless draw on Tuesday night, with both teams missing multiple scoring opportunities.
The game's intensity surged in the last 20 minutes, with close calls from both sides.
Rhode Island's Edu Rodriguez displayed impressive goalkeeping, making key saves to ensure the draw.
Inside the game stats: Rhode Island recorded its seventh shutout this season, the most since 2019. The team also noted its 11th tie in the last 30 matches over two seasons. Edu Rodriguez made three saves in the match, marking his fifth shutout this year. Rhode Island outshot Brown with 12 to 10 attempts.
