Federal Funding to Fuel Research and Aid Sustainable Growth in Rhode Island’s Commercial Fishing Sector

Rhode Island’s commercial fisheries and seafood sectors are significant contributors to the state, providing over 4,300 jobs and generating $420 million in economic impact.

To support and ensure the growth and sustainability of this sector, U.S. Senator Jack Reed has secured a $500,000 federal earmark for a comprehensive study by the Commercial Fisheries Research Foundation (CFRF) and the University of Rhode Island.

The study will tackle various challenges faced by commercial fishermen, such as climate change and ocean health issues. The funding will be utilized to modernize research initiatives, monitor marine species, implement squid jigging strategies, and continue removing ghost gear from Rhode Island waters.

Additionally, more local fishermen will be invited to participate in research initiatives, offering them a way to supplement their income. The earmark, part of the 2023 consolidated appropriations law, will be administered by the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
