Running Towards Hope: URI’s 14th Annual Be 5K Illuminates the Path to Mental Health Awareness and Suicide Prevention

The University of Rhode Island (URI) is hosting its 14th annual Be 5K Run/Walk for Mental Health Awareness and Suicide Prevention on October 15, with URI President Marc Parlange in attendance to underscore its importance.

The event supports the Heather Fund and URI's mental health programs and services. It encourages kindness, understanding, and advocacy while inviting participants to make personal pledges related to mental health. Various organizations and student groups that promote mental health and suicide prevention will participate, providing information and support to attendees.

The run/walk, which begins at 10 a.m. on the Kingston Campus, costs $20 ($15 for early, discounted registration) and includes pre-race activities, such as warming up to music and accessing mental health resources.

URI's Feinstein College Secures $1.1M Grant to Elevate and Diversify Special Education Programs Through Project SUSTAIN

The University of Rhode Island’s Feinstein College of Education received a $1.1 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Special Education and Programs to enhance and diversify special education programs.

Distributed over five years, the grant will fund Project SUSTAIN, aiming to prepare 30 professionals through master’s and certification programs in special education and dyslexia knowledge and practice. The project will emphasize recruiting educators from varied and historically minoritized backgrounds, focusing on equity, justice, and inclusion, to address educational disparities and better serve children with disabilities, particularly in high-need student populations.

Collaborating with several public schools and organizations, the initiative is devised to develop skills and promote sustainability in the special education sector, addressing existing inequities.
