Volunteers and Officials Battle to Map and Control Aggressive Invasive Hydrilla Plant in Indian Lake, South Kingstown

The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Development and volunteers from URI Watershed Watch have detected and mapped the hydrilla, a highly invasive aquatic plant, in Indian Lake, South Kingstown.

Originating from Eurasia and known for its rapid growth, hydrilla competes with native plants and offers no benefits to local wildlife.

Although utilizing an herbicide is considered the most effective countermeasure, it might not fully eradicate the issue, prompting officials and volunteers to formulate further control and mitigation plans.

Navigating Shoreline Access: The Complex Journey to Establishing Public Rights-of-Way in Rhode Island's Coastal Communities

The issue of public access to Rhode Island's shoreline has been partially addressed by new legislation allowing people to walk along the shoreline within a specific zone without trespassing.

However, the method of initially accessing the beach remains unsolved. Rights-of-way (ROWs), paths leading to the shoreline, can be designated by towns and the state through a thorough and slow legal process involving several methods and extensive documentation.

The Coastal Resources Management Council (CRMC) can designate and protect ROWs at the state level, but with 400 miles of Rhode Island coastline, only 234 ROWs have received such designation due to resource limitations and an exhaustive process, which includes evidence collection, public hearings, and legal reviews, often extending over several months or years.

Navigating the Timing of Your Flu Vaccination This Season

Health experts advocate for timely flu vaccinations as flu season approaches, emphasizing the seriousness of influenza which can cause numerous deaths each season.

Though the timing of vaccination can be tricky, experts recommend getting vaccinated a few weeks before potential exposure and encourage individuals to get it as soon as it's available, preferably in September or October.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) advises healthcare providers to offer the vaccine as long as influenza viruses are circulating.

The upcoming flu season is particularly concerning due to the coexistence of influenza, RSV, and COVID-19, with potential for overlapping symptoms and co-infections, making vaccination crucial.

Clear Out Your Cabinets: DEA Sponsors National Prescription Drug Take Back Day for Safe Medication Disposal

The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration is sponsoring National Prescription Drug Take Back Day on October 28th, offering a safe disposal option for unwanted or expired medications for residents, including those in South Kingstown and broader Rhode Island. Numerous collection sites, typically at local police stations, will be available from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The initiative accepts various forms of prescription drugs and vaping devices (battery removed), but not illegal drugs, syringes, sharps, or liquids. This service is free and anonymous.
