Sand Hill Cove Beach to Flourish with $3.1M in Upgrades: A New Boardwalk and Eco-Friendly Amenities on the Horizon
Sand Hill Cove Beach in Narragansett is set to undergo significant upgrades, including the addition of a 1,200-foot boardwalk, improved accessibility, and eco-friendly features, funded by a $3.1 million federal grant from the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF), approved by the U.S. National Park Service.
The Department of Environmental Management (DEM) will spearhead the development, aiming to enhance visitor experience and safety by replacing existing stairs and increasing ADA compliance.
Construction, expected to commence after the 2024 beach season, will be opened for bids in the coming months following state purchasing guidelines.
The enhancements also include shade structures, ADA-compliant ramps, picnic tables, and benches. The project aligns with past state efforts to improve and maintain key recreational facilities.
Jonnycake Center and URI Unite to Tackle Educational Hurdles with $325k State Grant through SKYLLS Initiative
The Jonnycake Center for Hope and the University of Rhode Island (URI) College of Education are collaborating on a project named "SKYLLS" (South Kingstown Year-Long Learning Supports), funded by a $325,000 state grant, to enhance educational opportunities and address school absenteeism among South Kingstown students.
The program targets economically disadvantaged students and aims to boost school attendance, improve English Language Arts achievement, increase FAFSA completion rates, and also involves administrative elements like staffing and activity coordination.
This initiative seeks to address chronic absenteeism and other educational challenges that have been exacerbated post-pandemic, as outlined in a report from the Annenberg Institute for School Reform at Brown University, offering additional supports for vulnerable students and their families.
Kingston-Based Stack House Wins $2,500 in HarborOne's Small Business Pitch
In HarborOne's 8th Annual Small Business “Pitch Contest,” Kingston-based Stack House secured second place, winning a $2,500 prize. The restaurant, specializing in brunch, fried chicken, and Southern cuisine, aims to offer homestyle and comfort food across New England and further while fostering sustainable careers for individuals from disadvantaged communities.
This effort is part of their mission to alleviate racial disparities and inequity. Bee Balm Co. of Woburn claimed first place and was awarded $10,000.
Providence Clears Back Taxes, Saving Camp Cronin from Auction in Narragansett and Preserving Seaside Property
The City of Providence clears its years of overdue property taxes, preventing the loss of its long-unused seaside camp, Camp Cronin, in Narragansett. Previously, owing to a neglect of tax payments amounting to $34,556 and misdirected tax bills, the 2-acre parcel was quietly auctioned in 2022. However, Mayor Brett Smiley's administration has settled the back taxes, averting a foreclosure. The property has been subject to taxation since 1958 due to municipal ownership regulations.

Last-Second Heroics in Women's Soccer Showdown: Fordham and URI Battle to a Dramatic 2-2 Draw
In a spirited second half during the 27th "Battle of the Rams" at the URI Soccer Complex, Fordham and Rhode Island (URI) Rams clashed to end in a dramatic 2-2 draw.
URI made a stellar comeback in the 67th minute with a distant shot goal by Sam Hagerty and then took a lead 83 seconds later thanks to a penalty kick converted by Jordyn Allen, overturning Fordham’s initial lead from the 50th minute.
A thrilling final moment saw Fordham equalize the score with only seven seconds left, courtesy of Fernanda Serna's quick shot following a deflection in the box.
Both teams now stand tied in the Atlantic 10 standings with 2-1-3.
URI Triumphs Over Brown in Thrilling Finish to Secure Fifth Consecutive Governor's Cup Victory
URI secured its fifth consecutive Governor's Cup, prevailing over Brown with a 34-30 victory in a match marked by multiple lead changes and decisive plays.
URI's Syeed Gibbs sealed the win with a crucial interception in the final seconds, following a high-scoring game that saw standout performances from both teams, including notable plays by Brown's Ian Franzoni and URI's Kasim Hill.
This marked the 107th meeting and the 41st Governor's Cup between the two teams.
URI Rams Clinch Narrow Victory Over No. 24 Fordham Despite Playing Final Minutes with 10 Men
The Rhode Island Rams triumphed with a 1-0 victory over the No. 24 Fordham Rams in a men's soccer match at the URI Soccer Complex. Despite being outperformed in several match statistics by Fordham, Rhode Island secured their win with a key goal from Brandon Bermingham in the 62nd minute. URI goalkeeper Edu Rodriguez made crucial saves in critical moments, and even after Rhode Island was reduced to 10 men in the final minutes following Rodrigo De Castro's red card, Fordham couldn't capitalize, leaving URI to maintain their slim lead until the end.
REBELS
The South Kingstown Rebels faced a challenging defeat with a 41-7 loss against the Eagles, despite a strong defensive start and maintaining a scoreless first quarter.
Key turnovers and impactful plays, such as a blocked punt and an interception, shifted momentum significantly in favor of the Eagles, who swiftly capitalized on these opportunities to score.
Even after facing this setback, the Rebels demonstrated resilience by managing to score in the second half, showcasing an attitude that could serve them well as they seek to secure a playoff spot in their upcoming games against Shea and Westerly, following an initial 3-0 start to their season.
