Three New England States Unite for Groundbreaking Multi-State Offshore Wind Proposals to Counter Rising Energy Prices
Rhode Island, Connecticut, and Massachusetts are collaborating to solicit large-scale offshore wind project proposals with the aim of securing lower energy prices across the states through collective bidding, a first in the U.S.
The effort involves individual state solicitations with a combined total of 6,000 megawatts of capacity, enough to power over 3 million homes. Submission closures are scheduled for January or February, with project selections by summer.
While developers can propose single-state projects, preference will be given to those serving multiple states, aiming to maximize cost-effectiveness and promote regional economic development amid rising construction costs and inflation in the offshore wind industry.
First Human West Nile Virus Case of 2023 Reported in Rhode Island Amid Increased Mosquito Activity
The Rhode Island Department of Health (RIDOH) reported the state's first human case of the West Nile Virus in 2023, involving a Newport County resident in their 70s, who is now recovering.
Given the ongoing mosquito season and a notable level of Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) and West Nile Virus present in Northeastern US mosquitoes, RIDOH emphasized continued preventive measures until the first hard frost.
Tips to avoid mosquito bites and breeding were shared, along with specific advisories for horse owners due to the animals' susceptibility to EEE and West Nile Virus.
The case follows other confirmed instances in neighboring states and comes amidst multiple West Nile Virus findings in various Rhode Island locations.
Mechanical Failures Freeze Activities at URI's Boss Ice Arena Until November
The University of Rhode Island's Boss Ice Arena is closed until November 6 due to significant mechanical issues that occurred in August, causing almost complete loss of the ice plant.
The university is actively working on installing a temporary ice plant for this season and developing a permanent repair strategy, while also coordinating with user groups to find alternative rinks for scheduled programs.
RIPTA Announces Sunday/Holiday Schedule and Limited Services for Indigenous Peoples’ Day/Columbus Day
The Rhode Island Public Transit Authority (RIPTA) has announced its plan to operate under a Sunday/Holiday service schedule on Monday, October 9, in recognition of Indigenous Peoples’ Day and Columbus Day.
On this day, all RIPTA offices, with the exception of the Newport Transportation Center, will be closed. Additionally, Flex Services will be limited, with only Route 203 (URI/Narragansett/South Kingstown) in operation from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
BankNewport Grant Powers Historical STEM Adventures for Camp Fuller Kids at South County Museum
The South County Museum, Narragansett, was granted $2,000 by BankNewport to support its summer partnership with Camp Fuller, a Greater Providence YMCA summer camp.
The museum, which holds over 20,000 objects depicting Rhode Island's diverse history, used the grant to host four field trips between June and August, offering campers hands-on experiences in 19th-century skills and tools.
Campers constructed wooden dragon boats and paddles during the visits, subsequently used for races back at the camp, and engaged in various historical and STEM-related activities, including touring exhibition halls and learning at maker spaces such as a blacksmith's forge and a wool-spinning, dyeing, and sewing station.
BankNewport and YMCA executives visited the program to observe the activities in action.
