State Officials Launch Rhode Island’s Flu Vaccination Campaign with Upcoming Community Clinics on October 4th and November 6th

Rhode Island has launched its 2023-2024 flu vaccination campaign with state officials, including Gov. Dan McKee, receiving their vaccinations as a kick-off event.

The Department of Health is set to host community flu clinics at Broad Rock Middle School on October 4th and November 6th, both from 4PM-7PM, urging individuals over 6 months, particularly older adults, young children, and those with weakened immune systems, to get vaccinated.

Couple Challenges Rhode Island's Shoreline Access Law, Alleging Unconstitutional Property Seizure

David and Linda Roth filed a lawsuit in Washington County Superior Court, challenging Rhode Island's shoreline access law, alleging it illegally seized private property and violated the state constitution's separation-of-powers doctrine.

The Roths, who own two properties in Westerly valued at a combined $26 million, request the court to deem the law unconstitutional or alternatively, to award them compensation.

The state's new shoreline access law, enacted in June, expanded public lateral access to the shore, allowing public access up to 10 feet landward of the lowest seaweed line.

This lawsuit follows a previous one by the Rhode Island Association of Coastal Taxpayers, which was dismissed in mid-September.

Upcoming Newport Pell Bridge Lane Restrictions to Cause Commuter Delays

The Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority has announced lane restrictions on the Newport Pell Bridge starting October 16th to facilitate rehabilitation work, including realignment of the highway and installation of a new toll gantry.

The lane reductions, which affect a 900-yard stretch on both eastbound and westbound sides, are expected to cause delays for commuters in the coming months.

The initial phase of the project is anticipated to conclude in April.

Fire Marshal Cites Grease Buildup, Failed Suppression System in Harborside Inn, Block Island, Blaze; Inspector's License Revoked Amid Ongoing Investigations

The Rhode Island State Fire Marshal revealed that a grease buildup and a failed fire suppression system played roles in the devastating fire at Block Island's Harborside Inn on August 19.

The fire, which began near the kitchen hood and exhaust fan, was deemed accidental. The inspector who erroneously marked the non-compliant fire suppression system as compliant has had his license revoked.

The building's alarm and sprinkler systems met regulations, but the inn hadn't been inspected by the state office since 2019 due to an address mix-up.

The Rhode Island Attorney General's office is further investigating to ascertain if any criminal conduct was involved in the incident.
