Rhode Island's New Shoreline Access Law Explained
The University of Rhode Island Coastal Institute, along with other organizations, organized a walking tour to explain its application. The law comes after debates regarding public beach access. It allows the public to use up to 10 feet landward from the high tide line, identifiable by seaweed or wet lines on the beach.
Private property owners along the shoreline are exempt from liability concerning public activities in this zone.
If no passage is available due to natural barriers, the public cannot access that part of the shore.
The law aims to clarify and ensure a balance between private property rights and public access to the coastline.
Narragansett Town Council Approves Key Renovation Motions for Maury Loontjens Library; State to Reimburse $3.14M of Project Costs
The Narragansett Town Council approved two motions for the Maury Loontjens Memorial Library renovation. One was to accept a $33,471 change order with EW Burman Inc., covering unforeseen cement work and other modifications. This order is within the budget and was presented to the council for transparency.
The second motion was the approval of a three-way furnishing bid for the renovation, totaling $126,291, split among three vendors.
The entire library project will cost around $9 million, with completion expected by mid-December. Although a $5.8 million bond was issued for the project, the state will reimburse $3.14 million, leaving the local taxpayers to cover $2.66 million.
Thresher Shark's Mysterious Death in Middletown Complicated by Missing Jaw
A 12-foot thresher shark recently washed ashore in Middletown.
Before the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Fisheries biologists could perform a necropsy to determine its cause of death, an individual removed the shark's jaw, complicating the investigation.
Michelle Passerotti, a biologist with NOAA, emphasized the importance of such samples for research and understanding rare species.
While unclear why this particular shark died, Passerotti mentioned that many sharks, once released after being caught, don't survive.
She reassured the public that shark appearances on popular beaches aren't cause for concern. NOAA urges anyone who finds a stranded shark to report it.
