R.I. DEM Reports Rise in Mosquito-Borne Illnesses; Camps Close as EEE Spreads
The R.I. Department of Environmental Management (DEM) reported that recent mosquito samples tested positive for eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) and West Nile virus. A mosquito from Boy Scout Camp Sandsland on Block Island was positive for EEE, marking its first detection outside of Glocester this season. After five positive samples in Glocester, DEM closed some of its recreational sites there. No humans in the state have been affected by EEE this year, but a donkey in Glocester contracted the virus. Due to the findings, the Boy Scouts of America shut down its camps in Glocester and Block Island for the season.
Additionally, the state has noted a rise in West Nile virus cases, with 12 positive mosquito samples this season from various locations. Both viruses are transmitted through mosquito bites. EEE, though rare in humans, is serious and can lead to neurological problems. In contrast, West Nile virus is more common, but most who contract it either show no symptoms or recover within a week. The risk for these illnesses remains until the first hard frost, which is when temperatures stay below 32 degrees for three continuous hours.
Crazy Burger Cafe in Narragansett Gets Another Spotlight on Guy Fieri's 'Triple D Nation'
Crazy Burger Cafe and Juice Bar in Narragansett was visited by Guy Fieri's team to film a segment for the "Triple D Nation" show. This is the second time the restaurant has been featured on one of Fieri's Food Network shows, having previously appeared on "Diners, Drive-ins and Dives." The restaurant expressed their excitement and honor at being revisited for the spin-off show.
Rhode Island Ranks 2nd in US for Confrontational Drivers, Forbes Study Reveals
A recent Forbes Advisor study indicates a rise in road rage incidents, with some states having more confrontational drivers than others. Based on a survey of 10,000 licensed drivers, Rhode Island ranks 2nd in the U.S., just behind Arizona, for the most confrontational drivers. In Rhode Island, aggressive driving has been a significant factor in fatal crashes. The most recent federal data reveals over 12,000 people died in speeding-related crashes in 2021, with a majority occurring on roads with speed limits of 30 mph or less. 57% of Rhode Islanders have reported another driver exiting their vehicle to confront or fight with them. Experts advise leaving earlier and understanding road-sharing, suggesting drivers visualize an infant in a car seat when feeling frustrated to help calm down.

Texas Rangers Triumph Over Boston Red Sox 15-5, Set Franchise Scoring Records
Marcus Semien contributed to the Texas Rangers' victory over the Boston Red Sox with three runs and a score. The Rangers won 15-5 on Wednesday, with Jonah Heim, Mitch Garver, Josh Jung, and Evan Carter hitting home runs. The Rangers, who currently have an 84-68 record, are closely following the Houston Astros for the AL West lead and are neck-and-neck with Seattle for the AL's third wild-card spot. Martin Perez had a notable performance, striking out five and allowing only three hits in nearly five scoreless innings. On the other hand, Boston, struggling at the bottom of the AL East, has now lost 12 out of their last 15 games. In this match, Texas set franchise records by achieving at least 10 runs for the 26th time and at least 15 runs for the sixth time. Every Texas starter contributed with at least a hit and a run.
