South Kingstown Police Chief Placed on Probation After No-Confidence Vote

Chief Matthew C. Moynihan of the South Kingstown Police Department faces a challenging year ahead as he has been put on probation for one year following significant internal issues, including the department’s recent loss of accreditation and a no-confidence vote by the police union.
These developments have triggered a rigorous evaluation of Moynihan’s leadership and management style, which has been characterized by some as overly direct and micromanaging.
The town management, including Town Manager James Manni, will conduct periodic reviews during this probation period to assess improvements and decide on Moynihan’s contract renewal next year.

South Kingstown Holds Tax Rate Steady with New Fiscal Year Budget

The South Kingstown Town Council approved a new budget for the fiscal year 2024-2025, maintaining the tax rate at $11.05 per $1,000 assessed value due to better-than-expected revenue figures and an improved tax collection rate.
The budget includes significant funding for school operations and town services, with adjustments made for human services funding and state reimbursements for business property exemptions.
Despite some concerns regarding the need for more detailed fiscal analysis and potential savings, the budget was largely supported by the council, reflecting confidence in the town’s financial management strategies.
