Federal Judge Dismisses Lawsuit Challenging Rhode Island's New Shoreline Access Law

A federal judge, William Smith, dismissed a lawsuit challenging Rhode Island's new shoreline access law. The lawsuit was filed by the Rhode Island Association of Coastal Taxpayers (RIACT), a group of anonymous beachfront property owners. They argued that the law, which enhances public access to the state's coastline, is unconstitutional and infringes on their property rights. The lawsuit named several state officials, but Judge Smith ruled that RIACT lacked the proper standing to sue and noted that their claims were baseless. While R.I. Senator Mark McKenney and R.I. Attorney General Peter Neronha praised the decision, Dave Breemer, RIACT's attorney, mentioned they would be looking into other legal avenues.

Rhode Island Residents Brace for Potential Electricity Rate Hike in October

Rhode Island residents may face a higher electricity bill starting in October. Rhode Island Energy has proposed a rate increase to the R.I. Division of Public Utilities and Carriers. If approved, the average household's monthly bill could increase by $32.29.

The proposed rate is a jump from the summer rate but slightly less than last winter's rate. The new rate, if accepted, would last until March 2024. Although some mitigation initiatives are in place to help residents, concerns have been raised about the financial impact on the community.

A decision on the rates is expected next week.

Rhode Island's 988 Crisis Lifeline Doubles Call Responses, Highlights Growing Mental Health Support

Rhode Island's 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, launched in July 2022, has received 6,285 calls, more than double the number from the previous National Suicide Prevention Hotline. Rhode Island ranks among the top states in terms of responsiveness to these calls. Nationwide, the 988 line has been contacted nearly 5 million times in the past year, with 42% of calls leading to mental health resources. The lifeline offers a range of responses, from basic emotional support to referrals for care or collaborating with crisis responders. Sen. Jack Reed was a primary advocate for establishing this three-digit lifeline.
